Community Heroes is a Springfield-Greene County Health Department initiative that seeks to unite volunteers in southwest Missouri.
Community Heroes is funded through the Homeland Security Bioterrorism Preparedness Grant issued to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The volunteer program seeks to recruit and train individuals who desire to help their communities before, during and after public health emergencies. Volunteers will be trained how to plan, prepare for and participate in public health response to a variety of disaster situations.
Volunteers primary focus will be training for a bioterrorism event or other public health emergency. They will learn how to quickly respond in order to help provide medication or vaccinations to large groups of affected individuals following a bioterrorist attack or other public health emergency.
Their efforts will help local public health departments prevent, contain or control reactions to biological, chemical or infectious agents and illnesses that would threaten public health.
Each of the 18 counties in Homeland Security Planning Region D (southwest Missouri) will have a local Community Heroes program. Community Heroes will be spearheaded by the local public health department in cooperation with the county office of emergency management. Community Heroes is coordinated through the regional Community Heroes office at the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.
